Barr Lake

Join Bird Conservancy of the Rockies for a monthly educational Family & Homeschool program. Each month we’ll focus on a different subject or area of interest to share with your family. Participants should expect each activity to largely take place outside and a parent or guardian should plan to stay with their child(ren) through the duration of the program.

May’s theme is ‘Birds of Prey’. Some of our most impressive avian residents in Colorado and at Barr lake are the incredible birds of prey. From their eyesight to their adept flight patterns these birds are very well adapted to the role they play in our ecosystems. We’ll be joined by Nature’s Educators and their education animals to see birds of prey up close and see the adaptations of these birds first hand.

Accessibility Information: Handicap parking is available at the meeting location along with accessible restrooms. Some of this program may include slow-paced walking along flat gravel or dirt paths. Accessible equipment will be available for use during this program.

This program takes place at the Barr Lake State Park Nature Center located at 13401 Picadilly Rd., Brighton, CO. Please note, a $10 Daily or Annual Colorado State Parks Pass is required for entry into the park at all times. Pets are not permitted within the wildlife refuge area of the park.

March’s theme is ‘Bird Song’. From the call of an eagle to the rhythmic chirp of a backyard bird, bird songs and calls are something many of us have come to know. In this program we’ll learn more about bird songs & build a working knowledge of how these sounds play an important role in the world of birds.

February’s theme is ‘Feederwatching & Birds of Winter’. While winter may seem like a cold and quiet season, we have many bird species that stick around! In this session we’ll talk about the backyard birds of winter and the food that they look for. We’ll also take some time to look at bird feeders, talk about Feederwatch and make our own suet to support birds in your backyard!

January’s theme is ‘Bald Eagle Extravaganza’ and will focus on learning all about the Bald Eagles at Barr Lake!

Accessibility Information: This event does include approximately 1.5 miles of walking across packed dirt/gravel terrain, with little to no incline.
