The Great Backyard Bird Count is a community science project, designed to engage any and all in bird watching and population monitoring. Learn how you can contribute to bird conservation from your own backyard! Families and children encouraged!
We’ll run a bird walk for the first two hours and host a kid-friendly DIY bird feeder workshop for the last. Feeder kits provided by Brighton Lowe’s. This event is free, but registration is required.

August’s theme is ‘Bird Banding’. There’s no better time and place to learn about the science of studying bird migratory patterns than joining in on a bird banding station visit! On either of these dates in August, join us as we open the nets for the Fall 2024 season aiming to capture and band different migratory songbirds. We’ll visit our station located at Barr Lake, learning from Bird Conservancy volunteers and scientists about why we band birds as well as what we can learn from this project!

May’s theme is ‘Birds of Prey’. Some of our most impressive avian residents in Colorado and at Barr lake are the incredible birds of prey. From their eyesight to their adept flight patterns these birds are very well adapted to the role they play in our ecosystems. We’ll be joined by Nature’s Educators and their education animals to see birds of prey up close and see the adaptations of these birds first hand.

In this session we’ll talk about the backyard birds of winter and the food that they look for. We’ll also take some time to look at bird feeders, talk about Feederwatch and make our own suet to support birds in your backyard!
