Family Nature Club: Science of Snow

By | | No Comments

Love it or hate it, there is more to snow than meets the eye! Join Bird Conservancy of the Rockies educators for the “Science of Snow”. We discover how snow is made, explore the beautiful patterns of snowflakes, and create some snow-art (“snart”?). If there’s no snow, not to worry – we will make our own (and show you how)!

Science of Snow” will be outside the entire time. Please dress comfortably for the weather and bring snacks/water as needed. Family Nature Club is intended for children and their grownups. Each family group will receive an Exploration Kit to use during the series to investigate the nature around them and to complete challenges at home between sessions.

Please note that this trip is currently full!
If you would like to be added to a waitlist of this trip or be contacted about future trips, please contact Joe Pettit

Join Bird Conservancy of the Rockies at the iconic Zapata Ranch for a weekend of exploration in the majestic San Luis Valley. Guests will be joined by scientists, birders, ranchers, and expert guides as they tour the 100,000 acre ranch and visit the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge to view Sandhill Cranes on their spring migration. This exclusive trip is perfect for birders, nature lovers and anyone interested in land conservation.

Medano – Zapata Ranch

The group will explore the extensive meadows, lakes, historic headquarters, and bison barn while learning about the 2,000-head wild bison herd and it’s role in conservation. We will explore the original Medano Homestead which dates back to the 1860s and see the fascinatingly diverse ecosystem in this portion of the ranch. As we drive amongst wild bison we will keep an eye out for the other extraordinary animals that call this side of the ranch home. Elk, porcupine, coyotes, golden eagles, great horned owls, hawks, and pronghorn are commonly spotted.

Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge

We’ll be greeted at Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge by the “gar-oo-oo” of sandhill cranes, the quacks of mallard ducks, and the vibrant whistling songs of western meadowlarks. We will also find beautiful vistas of wetlands and meadows that make up great portions of the Refuge. As a backdrop to the Refuge’s many scenic vistas, visitors can also enjoy amazing sunsets against the backdrop of the nearby San Juan Mountains.

Accommodations

When not in the field, guests will enjoy wonderful accommodations and dining provided by Ranchlands, the amazing team that manages the ranch. Guests will be joined by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies staff including Executive Director and Sandhill Crane expert Tammy VerCauteren and Anna Greenberg, Private Lands Wildlife Biologist based in the San Luis Valley. With a small group size, the trip will give guests a high level of access to scientists, birding experts and conservation practitioners and the opportunity for deep learning about the challenges and successes in the bird conservation world.

Bald Eagle Watch Volunteer Training – FULL!

By | | No Comments

THIS EVENT IS CURRENTLY FULL. WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING ANYMORE VOLUNTEERS THIS YEAR. THANK YOU!

Bird Conservancy of the Rockies’ Bald Eagle Watch program was started in 1988 to monitor and help protect the Bald Eagle nest at Barr Lake State Park, northeast of Denver. Now, community scientists with the Bird Conservancy monitor eagle nests across the Front Range to provide information to biologists on the nesting success of the Colorado population.

What: Monitor and collect data on Bald Eagle nesting behavior and productivity. Report any disturbances that may impact nesting eagles. Data help wildlife managers and conservation groups ensure continued healthy populations of Bald Eagles.
When: February to July
Where: Colorado (statewide, but primarily on the front range)
Who: Anyone who can monitor designated nest(s) weekly for a minimum of one hour, fill out a data sheet and enter into an online reporting system; can drive to nest site; enjoys monitoring either alone or with another person; and has a spotting scope or binoculars
Training: Training, via ZOOM, will be held during the day on January 21, 2023. There will be two sessions. The first session is from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and is for new volunteers. The second session is from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. and is for anybody that would like more information on the program
To sign up: Please e-mail Meredith McBurney, Volunteer Coordinator, to register for training. You must complete the training in order to participate.
