Family Nature Club: Animals in Winter

By | | No Comments

This month we will investigate how animals survive the long, cold winter months. Do they put on coats, hats and gloves and snuggle up next to a warm fire? Join us to explore how animals survive winter, play games and investigate animal biofacts.

Animals in Winter will be outside the entire time. Please dress comfortably for the weather and bring snacks/water as needed.

Barr Lake Christmas Bird Count

By | | No Comments

Once a year each winter, dozens of volunteers congregate at Barr Lake State Park, Colorado to dedicate their day to a singular purpose: tally every bird of every species seen within a 15-mile diameter circle centered on Barr Lake. This tradition has been taking place every year since 1980 at Barr Lake. The 2023 Christmas Bird Count will take place on December 31.

We have driving routes available if you want to stay in a warm vehicle that makes frequent stops to count birds. We also have walking routes that can cover up to six miles. You can be a recorder and write down the number of birds being identified, you can be the counter or you can be the identifier! These counts really are for everyone!

If you’d like to participate email Colin Woolley, Banding Manager and Barr Lake CBC Compiler.

Family Nature Club: Tracking Wildlife

By | | No Comments

During this month’s session we will explore how we can find out what animals have visited an area, all without laying eyes on them! We will learn about animal tracks and other signs, and sharpen our observation skills as we search for any clues that point to what animals are visiting our neighborhood.

Tracking Wildlife will be outside the entire time. Please dress comfortably for the weather and bring snacks/water as needed.

Persistently Pursuing Ptarmigans and other Bird Camp Stories

By | Education | No Comments

As I look back on my seasons as a Camp Director and counselor before that, the moments I think of most often are the moments in between the big things. They’re the glue that holds it all together and cements the impact had by camp on my life. This summer at Bird Camp is no different. I’ve included a few of our favorite stories of awe, wonder, and dirt that wove together the whole of what we did this season.
